Travel to the ancient and biblical lands of Jordan, visiting the mysterious city of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Carved from rose-colored rock over 2000 years ago, Petra’s magnificent architecture has been seen in numerous movies including “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.”
Our journey begins in the Jordanian capital of Amman. From there, we will venture to ancient cities, temples from Roman times and the site where Jesus was baptized. As we journey towards Petra we retrace ancient trade routes along Jordan’s hilly backbone, stopping by castles built by the crusaders.
At dawn, we explore Petra on horseback, guided by Bedouins through the fabled rock gorge called the Sig before arriving at one of the modern Wonders of the World, the famed treasury building known as the Al Khazneh. We will also have the opportunity to photograph the site at night, as evening illumination transforms Petra’s rose walls into a dreamscape of fantastic colors, offering us a rare chance for striking photographs.
Leaving Petra, we travel to Wadi Rum, also known as Valley of the Moon. This stark landscape, inhabited since prehistoric times, was home to the exploits of Lawrence of Arabia. Here, rock formations, petroglyphs and Bedouin camps offer numerous photographic opportunities. Enjoy a mint tea or cardamom coffee before touring this vast desert in a Bedouin-driven jeep.We end the day with traditional Bedouin music, dancing and food, spending the night in elegant five-star Bedouin-style tents.
Karen Kasmauski, a veteran National Geographic Magazine photographer, will accompany our group mentor travelers on taking memorable images during this extraordinary excursion.
